Owslebury School Newsletter - 2018 May

Owslebury School Newsletter - 2018 May

Hello from Mrs. Smith

We have had a lovely start to the new term (apart from the April showers!) and all the staff are impressed with the children’s attitude towards their learning and their new topics. Children in Marwell class very excitedly told me about the Fairy Door which appeared in their outside area and showed me the letters that they had written to the fairy who lives there. Morestead Class started the new term with some tropical fruit tasting and had an exciting day this week when they took part in a range of activities during their African Day. A Viking ship has appeared over the Easter break in the Baybridge Class and I know the children are looking forward to developing their historical knowledge further. In Hensting Class, I have had the pleasure of teaching year 5 in the mornings, we are learning about the style of Rudyard Kipling and his ‘Just So’ stories. The year 6 children have been working very hard in the final run up to SATs. I know I speak on behalf of all the staff when I say how very proud I am of the positive attitude they have had to their learning all year and in particular in the last few weeks. I know they will do their very best and continue to support each other.

When the weather has been kind to us we have managed to get onto the field. It has been lovely to see classes reading stories inside the Willow Dome too. We even managed to get an article about our Willow Dome in the Hampshire Chronicle last week!
Its another busy term and there are lots of exciting events coming up, please make sure the dates in the newsletter are added to your calendars at home so you don’t miss any, and keep your eye out for notifications through Parentmail (our new school / home communication provider) which is where we will be sending any reminders.

The weather looks promising for the May Bank Holiday weekend, we look forward to seeing you back in school on Tuesday 8th May.

Royal Wedding Celebration Day 18th May

Prince Harry and Meghan MarkleWith just weeks to go until the Royal Wedding, excitement is building at Owslebury. We will be celebrating in style on Friday 18th May and children are invited to come to school dressed for a wedding or in red, white and blue. School dinners will be traditional hotdogs (or vegetarian hotdogs) , potato wedges and ice cream.

Please note there will be NO Celebration assembly on this day.

Owslebury Eco Group

Thank you and well done to everyone who applied to join the Owslebury Eco Group – we have had so many good applications. Successful applicants will be notified very soon.

If you are able to, please download the free ParentMail app from the App store on Android and IOs. We highly recommend this app, it is a very useful app which will send you instant notifications from us (a bit like texts – but free). It is also a good way of keeping track of school messages and keeping them all in one place rather than having to scroll through your busy email inbox!

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

You may be aware of the new Data Protection Regulations that are coming into effect at the end of May. We may need to send out information or consent forms, for example photograph consent forms, that you have already completed. Amendments may need to take place to ensure we are compliant with the regulations. Again, we value your understanding whilst we take the appropriate actions to ensure our compliance.

Attendance Matters

Attendance Matters LogoOur whole school target for attendance is 97%. Currently our attendance is 96.9%. It would be fabulous with a bit more effort this term if we could climb above the target!

Please try to make sure you schedule appointments for outside of school hours where possible and remember that requests for absences will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.

May I please remind you requests for absences will not be authorised during statutory assessment periods which is the month of May for KS1, week beginning 14th May for KS2 and week beginning 11th June for Year 1.

Class attendance figures are:

Marwell 96.7%
Morestead 96.7%
Baybridge 96.4%
Hensting 97.8%

FRIENDS—Summer Fair—15th June— Call for helpers!

The Summer Fair will be held after school on Friday 15th June. The money raised by the Friends goes such a long way to helping the children enjoy new experiences in school. Tracy Archibald sent a letter this week.

Our next INSET day will be on Monday 4th June. Our final INSET day will be on the 23rd July which is the very last day of the summer term. INSET days for next year will be confirmed very soon.

Bags 2 School—Mon 11th June

Bags 2 School will be collecting from us on Monday 11th June. This is such an easy fundraiser for the school and a great way to get rid of any unwanted clutter. Look out for the bags which will be sent home with children nearer the time.

Learning Council

Learning TitleThis half term the Learning Council have been working together to create posters for Growth Mindset to display around the school. They are keen to make sure that all children understand what this means. The Learning Council are also working on a presentation to parents which we hope they will deliver later this term.

School Census day 17th May

The school census is a statutory census that takes place during the autumn, spring, and summer terms. The census collects information about pupils and about the schools themselves and future funding is linked to the number of pupils on roll and the number of pupils who take the universal free school meals. On Thursday 17th May we will be providing a free hot meal for every child in year R, 1 and 2. School dinners on this day will be fishfingers (or vegetarian curry bites) and chips, followed by ice cream Please encourage your child to try a dinner on that day.

Walk to School Week 21st to 25th May 2018

Our school is supporting ‘Walk to School Week. Whilst we hope as many parents as possible will leave their cars at home, we appreciate that many cannot avoid driving. In order to include as many children as possible , we would encourage parents to park and stride—park safely away from the school and walk the remaining distance. As well as promoting health and environmental benefits of walking to school, it is a good opportunity to discuss key road safety messages.

We hope you will be able to support this event and highlight the importance of daily exercise. Children will be able to sign the class wall chart on the days they walk to school and will receive a certificate at the end of the following week.

Sun Safety

The weather during the Bank Holiday Weekend is looking promising and there is definitely warmer weather on the horizon!
Can I please remind you to provide your child with a hat that they can wear at lunchtimes. It is also important to remember to apply sun cream in the mornings.

The children in Marwell Class can be outside frequently throughout the day. Please make sure you

School Trends— a message from our school uniform supplier

We have listened to feedback from parents about the cost of our delivery service, and from 27th April 2018 School Trends are reducing the carriage cost of parent orders from £4.95 to just £2.99. This charge will apply to all parents’ orders, whether delivered to home or to school. Free delivery will apply on orders over the value of £75 (including VAT). You will now be able to have delivery to home or an alternate address before the start of term, or to the school during term times and all at a reasonable cost. I hope you will agree that this is a much-improved option for both School and Parent.

Have your say

I would like to provide parents, carers and children with the opportunity to raise concerns, make comments about the school in general, share new ideas which may help other parents or the school, or simply have their say about a schooling issue. If you would like to make use of this facility, please complete the form below.
