Owslebury School Newsletter - 2018 January

Hello from Mrs. Smith

A Happy New Year to all our families and a warm welcome back for the new school term and year. The staff and I would like to extend our thanks for the lovely cards, good wishes and gifts which were given to us prior to the holiday.

The children have quickly settled back in to their routines and have enjoyed the launch of their new topics. We hope that the learning forecasts coming home today will provide you with some useful information about what we will be learning and looking forward to at Owslebury this term. There has already been great excitement in the Morestead Class which has become an artic experience and winter wonderland! I am looking forward to seeing where the learning opportunities take the children. There has been lots of science learning in both Baybridge and Hensting classes with lots of ‘hands on’ practical investigations. Children in Marwell Class have been busy making different habitats from around the world.

We look forward to welcoming Roanna Dolan on 5th February , a student from Winchester University who will be working alongside Mrs Kirby and Mrs Aylward in Morestead Class for the second part of the Spring Term.

Friends

A huge thank you to Mrs Archibald and her fantastic team of helpers for organising the Christmas Fair which was a huge success and raised over £1500. A special thank you to Mr Bastian and his team from Marwell Hotel who kindly provided and served all the fabulous hot food and to Miss Mason for providing the refreshments. Thank you to everyone who generously donated items for the Fair and kindly supported the event on the day. The money you raise helps support a wide range of events and activities for the children to enjoy throughout the year.

Attendance

Attendance Matters LogoAt the end of the Autumn term, 49% of our children achieved 100% attendance which is an increase compared to the same period last year.

Our attendance for the Autumn Term was 96.9% which is slightly below our target of 97%. Attendance for the Autumn Term was: Marwell Class: 97.2%, Morestead Class: 96.9%, Baybridge Class: 96.8% and Hensting Class: 98.4% .
Thank you for your continuing support.

Bad Weather and School Closure

Owslebury Church in the snowAs the weather is turning colder, please can you ensure your children have a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves (clearly named) so they can stay warm and enjoy their break times.

In inclement weather conditions we will always try our utmost to keep school open but will consider the safety of pupils and staff when making this decision.
In the event of school being closed parents will be contacted by text message before school starts.

Information about school closures is also posted on the Hantsnet webpage.

Morning Routines

Please can I remind parents that the school bell is rung promptly at 8.55am at which point all children should line up and be ready to go into classes. Please could I ask parents / carers to wait on the playground and not on the path by the side of the hall, equally, please do not to come into the school with your child in the morning as it can be disruptive for the children and delay the start of their learning. If you need to come to the office please come through the main entrance and not through the school building.

Early Bird Club starts at 8.30am and children are delivered to their classrooms in time to join their friends as they come in to school. There are still spaces available if needed and the cost is only £1 per child per day.

E-safety

We will be taking part in the national event ‘Safer Internet Day’ on the 6th February with the theme ‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you. All the children will be taking part in a range of activities aimed to highlight the positive uses of technology and to help them stay safe online.

My child is unwell – should they go to school today?

Please find attached a very useful guide to child illnesses with an on line link to a helpful website with further information. This is a guide to help you decide if and when your child should remain off school, the simple guide has been produced for a number of the most common illnesses. This online resource provides parents with medical advice on how to look after their child should they become unwell this winter and in particular where they should go to access services, as well as advice on attending school. All this information has been brought together as part of the ‘Healthier Together’ Campaign, which is a joint initiative between the NHS and Public Health, Hampshire County Council.
