Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO's)

Junior Road Safety Officers

We are Owslebury Primary School Junior Road Safety Officers.

Our job is to tell everyone in our school how to stay safe on the roads.  We run competitions, talk about road safety in assembly or in the classroom and put up posters around school.

We will learn how to stay safe on the road by using the Green Cross Code and share what we learn with our peers.

What do Junior Road Safety Officers do?

They deliver road safety messages during assemblies.  They create posters and safety displays within the school.  They run competitions and get the other children involved.  They support national campaigns (e.g., Road Safety Week).  They make all children aware of safe behaviour around school gates and the school entrances.

They often focus on topics such as:

  • Safe road crossing
  • The importance of wearing seatbelts
  • Using cycle helmets
  • Staying visible in low light
  • Avoiding distractions (like mobile phones near roads)

Why is the message from our Junior Road Safety Officer important?

Our children are amongst the most vulnerable road users. They are young, naive and need to be taught. By involving pupils directly in safety promotion, schools create:

  • Shared responsibility through all the children
  • Child to child learning, which gets the message across in a way the children understand.
  • Increased awareness at home and in the wider community
  • When students take ownership of road safety messaging, it often has a stronger impact than adult-led instruction.

What skills does a Junior Road Safety Officer develop?

Being a JRSO helps students build many things.  It can only play a positive role for children.

  • It builds confidence when speaking in public.
  • Great teamwork skills
  • Gives them responsibility and leadership
  • Makes them aware of the community and its surroundings.
  • The role empowers children to become ambassadors for safety
