Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium was introduced by the Department for Education (DfE) in 2011, as additional funding for specific groups of pupils who are vulnerable to possible underachievement. These include pupils who are entitled to Free School Meals, those Looked After by the Local Authority and children of armed service personnel. The intended effect of this funding is to accelerate progress, raise attainment and support pupils in the participation of activities in the wider curriculum.
"The Pupil Premium is one of the most important tools we have to address the stubborn link between family income and education outcomes" (Education Endowment Foundation).
The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools to decide how the additional funding should be spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
Pupil Premium at Owslebury Primary School
At Owslebury Primary School, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment free from deprivation and disadvantage, where their potential is not limited by circumstances of birth or social background. By developing a deep understanding of each individual child and carefully identifying any barriers to their learning, we are committed to ensuring high levels of achievement for all, regardless of their life beyond the classroom.
"The most effective strategies for supporting disadvantaged learners focus on giving teachers and wider staff the capacity, expertise, and development to meet the needs of their learners" (Research Schools Network).
As a school, we recognise that some families, though not eligible for Free School Meals (FSM), live on very low incomes and face challenges similar to those of FSM-eligible families. Additionally, there are families who qualify for FSM but choose not to register. By fostering a culture where all staff are dedicated to addressing the needs of every child, and where poor attainment is never accepted in any context, we are able to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
