Autumn 2 (2024/25)- Rainforests
Rainforests Topic – An Exhilarating Learning Journey!
This half term, Baybridge Class has been fully immersed in our exciting topic: Rainforests. Our learning journey began with a fantastic Hook Day at the Marwell Zoo, where the children visited the Tropical House to explore a ‘real-life’ rainforest environment and meet with experts. It was an inspiring and unforgettable experience that sparked curiosity and enthusiasm for the topic ahead.
English
In English, we have explored a range of non-fiction texts linked to our rainforest theme.
-
We studied information texts inspired by the popular wildlife series Deadly 60, analysing their features and layout.
-
The children created their own engaging animal fact files, applying their knowledge of non-fiction text structure and language.
-
We also developed our persuasive writing skills by composing formal letters focused on protecting rainforests and preventing deforestation.
Throughout the unit, children explored the language features of non-fiction writing, including headings, subheadings, technical vocabulary, and formal tone. Some children have also been working towards earning their pen licence, focusing on neat presentation and consistent handwriting.
Our class reading text has been the adventurous and much-loved novel The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. Through this text, the children have:
-
Developed their reading comprehension skills
-
Practised making predictions
-
Strengthened their inference skills
-
Explored and analysed key characters
The story has provided a rich and exciting link to our rainforest topic.
Science – Living Things and Their Habitats
In Science, our focus has been on Living Things and Their Habitats.
The children have explored a wide range of living things, including animals, humans, and plants. They have learned about:
-
What living things need to survive
-
How habitats support different species
-
How animals and plants are specially adapted to their environments
We linked our science learning closely to rainforest ecosystems, exploring how climate and vegetation create unique habitats.
Geography & Topic Work – Understanding Rainforests
As part of our wider topic learning, the children have:
-
Learned about the layers of the rainforest (emergent, canopy, understory, forest floor)
-
Explored rainforest vegetation and ecosystems
-
Studied the animals and indigenous communities who live there
-
Investigated the causes and impact of deforestation
-
Discussed ways we can help preserve and protect rainforests
The topic has been an exhilarating and enriching experience, combining reading, writing, science, and geography in a meaningful and engaging way.
We are incredibly proud of the children’s enthusiasm, creativity, and growing understanding of the importance of protecting our world’s rainforests. 🌿
