Spring 1 - Mayan Civilisation

Ancient Mayan Hook Day

Today was an amazing day of learning, and the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the fascinating world of the Ancient Maya.

We began by learning about who the Maya were, when they lived, and where their civilisation was located. The children were interested to discover how advanced and complex Maya society was.

Next, we explored Maya religion, which was an important part of everyday life. The Maya believed in many different gods, each with both positive and negative powers. They believed the gods could help or harm them, so they showed respect through rituals such as dancing, singing and making offerings. The children then worked in groups to investigate a specific Maya god and created detailed fact files. Their work was fantastic, and they showed great enthusiasm and creativity.

We then moved on to Maya maths, which the children found particularly exciting. They learned that the Maya number system used just three symbols: a dot to represent 1, a bar to represent 5, and a shell to represent 0. The children enjoyed creating, decoding, adding and subtracting numbers using this system, developing their problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging way.

Finally, we explored the importance of Maya masks. Masks were used for many different purposes, including ceremonies and decorating temples. After researching different designs and meanings, the children created their own masks, which looked absolutely fantastic.

It was a brilliant day, and the children should be very proud of all they learned and created.
