Autumn 2 - Space
Hensting Class Space-Themed Hook Day
Hensting Class had an amazing time during our Space-Themed Hook Day!
We began the day by exploring the beauty and wonder of space, then created some stunning pastel artwork of planets and stars on black card. Our classroom truly looked out of this world!
Next, we learned about coordinates and linked our maths to space by identifying different planets and aliens on a grid — a fun and creative way to put our skills into practice.
In the afternoon, we travelled back in time to the Moon landing of 1969 and took inspiration from it for some creative writing. Each child started with the same opening line and then let their imagination take over to write what happened next. The results were fantastic — we had stories that were exciting, funny, and even a little bit spooky!
All in all, Hensting Class had a stellar day full of learning and creativity. Well done, everyone!
Hensting’s Outdoor Learning Day
Hensting Class had a fantastic time during our Outdoor Learning Day! We began the day by exploring fractions of shapes, creating our own examples using natural materials such as sticks, leaves, and conkers. Later, we revisited our Autumn term class reader and held a lively debate around the statement “Living forever is a good thing.” Everyone contributed thoughtful arguments for both sides, working brilliantly as a team to ensure every voice was heard.
In the afternoon, we turned our attention to science, diving into our topic on space and exploring Newton’s Third Law of Motion — that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. To test this theory, we designed and launched simple rockets, investigating how the angle of launch affected the distance travelled. It was a day full of discovery, teamwork, and hands-on learning!
DT Fairground Rides
Hensting Class have worked incredibly hard this half term to create their very own space-themed fairground rides. The children began by researching different types of rides and identifying the key components that make them work. As a class, they chose to recreate a swinging chairs ride and explored how they could design their own unique, space-inspired version.
They learned about motors and simple electrical circuits before moving on to the design stage. Using rulers and saws, the children carefully measured and cut their wooden pieces. With adult support, they assembled their structures using a glue gun.
Next, they created the seats for their rides, keeping to the space theme with imaginative designs such as rockets, spaceships, and meteors. Finally, they combined all the components with an electric motor—and watched in amazement as their rides spun independently for the first time!
It was a fantastic project that showcased creativity, teamwork, and brilliant design-and-technology skills.
Winchester Science Centre Trip
The children had a fantastic day at the Winchester Science Centre. They began with an exciting discovery session all about rockets and rocket fuel. After designing their own rockets, they completed an initial test launch before learning about the importance of aerodynamics. With their new knowledge, they refined their designs—resulting in rockets that flew even farther.
After lunch, we enjoyed a brilliant planetarium show exploring the constellations and the planets in our solar system. The children were then free to discover the many hands-on exhibits across both floors of the science centre, rounding off a day filled with curiosity, learning, and fun.
