Spring 2 - Magnificent Mountains
Mountains Hook Day
Wow — what an amazing Hook Day!
The children in Hensting Class have worked incredibly hard today. We began by looking at topological maps and then had a go at creating our own topological mountains, using contour lines to show how high and steep a mountain can be.
Next, we used our designs to create 3D models, layering different coloured paper to represent the contours and adding small springs to demonstrate height.
We then explored how mountains are formed, learning about the impact tectonic plates have on our Earth. After that, we investigated one of the most dangerous volcanoes in history and the catastrophic effects it had on a city over 2,000 years ago — Mount Vesuvius. We watched a video to help us understand how and when the eruption occurred, and used the information to create a timeline of the events of 24th August 79 AD.
To finish the day, the children completed the science experiments they had been working on by paper mâchéing their mountains and painting them, before watching them “erupt” when vinegar was added to baking soda!
Overall, the children had a wonderful day and learned so much. Well done, Hensting Class!
