Autumn 1 - Our Local Area
What a first day back to the new school year we have had!
Today the children returned from their summer holidays with huge smiles, eager to find out what this term's topic would be. We quickly introduced our new topic - Our Local Area, Through the Keyhole - and discussed what we already knew and what we would like to find out.
Throughout the day we completed a range of exciting activities including: a quiz about Owslebury; some 'through the keyhole' artwork; using magnifying glasses to look and categorise different objects from our Forest School area, exploring in our farm role play area and a scavenger hunt!
In our Art lessons this half term we have been learning about Andy Goldsworthy, a British sculpture who creates artwork from objects he finds in the natural environment. We have had great fun going out into the forest school area to collect different natural items (leaves, twigs, conker shells etc) which we have then transformed into our own sculptures! We are currently working on creating our own clay faces. We have been practising creating these in the classroom and we will eventually sculpt them straight onto the trees outside in our forest school area. Here are some photos of the planning and preparation stage, before we take our artwork outside!
End of topic celebration
For our end of topic celebration, we went on a local walk around Owslebury. We looked for all of the human and physical features that we had learnt about throughout our topic of, 'Our Local Area'. We were able to locate human features such as our school, the 'library', the post office and four different types of houses: detached, semi-detached, terraced and bungalows. We also noticed physical features such as: hills, trees and fields. We finished our trip by visiting our favourite place in Owslebury - the park!
