Spellings:

At Owslebury, we have recently introduced ‘Spelling Shed’ as part of our English curriculum. Spelling Shed is an interactive tool which children can use to practise their spellings at home. Our long term plans for spellings are created from the structure that this scheme follows and therefore we are ensuring that all of the spelling rules set out in the national curriculum are being explicitly taught throughout the year and phrase group. It is important that children learn spelling rules, rather than just a spelling list of words, as they will then be able to apply these spelling rules to unfamiliar words in their writing.

Every child in the school is provided with their own login, meaning each week they can access games to help them learn the spelling list that has been set by their teacher. Children are expected to practise regularly at home as part of their spelling homework in preparation for a weekly spelling test. In our experience, we find that the 'little and often' approach is most effective. They will also always be able to access the appropriate year group national curriculum spelling words, which we encourage children to practise regularly in addition to their weekly spelling rule.
