Reading
Did you know that reading ability has a significant link to attainment in all curriculum areas, and that an individual’s reading skills directly impacts employment outcomes in later life? These are just two reasons why reading regularly is such an essential part of a child’s education. Parental support when it comes to reading is vital, as the impact that frequent reading at home with an adult has is significant.
Reading in Reception and KS1
All children in Marwell and Morestead Class have access to Bug Club, where they will be allocated books which are suitable for their reading level. Your child’s class teacher will check this regularly to make sure that all children are accessing the reading resources that are appropriate for their ability. Children will also have access to book banded books in school, which they can take home to read. They will be responsible for changing their own book once they have finished reading it. The children should read at least 5 times per week, which can be recorded in their reading planner and handed in each morning. Once children have worked their way up through the book bands (from Pink to Lime) they will become a ‘Free Reader’, selecting chapter books from the school library.
Reading in KS2
At the beginning of KS2, some children may still be working their way through the final stages of the book bands. These children will be given a bug club login to practise at home, and are encouraged to take home a banded book at their level. Once they have completed Lime books and their teacher feels they are ready, they will become a ‘Free Reader’. This means that they select chapter books from the school library to bring home and read. It is important that they access a range of different genres, that are appropriate for their age and ability, and your child’s class teacher will support them to select appropriate books. The children should read at least 5 times per week, which can be recorded in their reading planner and handed in each morning.
