Autumn 2

Superheroes and Heroes

Superheroes

This week we arrived to find some suspicious footprints in our classroom. We then found a letter in our Curiosity Cube from the villain Doc Ock telling us she had taken all our superhero toys! We got busy making posters, writing to Doc Ock and making traps to catch her. We also dressed up as superheroes in our role play, made superhero hand print art and tried to save the heroes from the tuff tray spiders web. In addition to this we also really enjoyed a stay and play session with our parents.

Supertato

This week we shared the story Supertato. We spoke about the Evil Pea and how he kept trying to make mischief!

For our activities this week we sorted the evil peas into the correct numbered pots, tied up the Evil Pea using shoe laces, created our own supper veggies and wrote to the Evil Pea to ask him to stop making mischief! We enjoyed making our own Supertato and other Super Veggies in the creative area- we thought about different ways we could fix the paper together. Some of us even joined the bad guys!

Unfortunately, Evil Pea was spotted in our outdoor area on Friday with his friends- Evil Blueberry and Evil Tomato so we had to set a trap! We built a very secure cage to stop them escaping.

People Who Help us week

This week we received a visit from Caretaker Colin!

He spoke to us about the jobs he does to look after our school and make sure it is a safe place for us to learn and play. He showed us the clothes he wears including a hi vis jacket and hard boots. He also told us about how he unblocked our sink after it had too much sand in it!
We then helped him test the temperature of the water in our art area which he has to do regularly to check it is safe for us to use.

We thoroughly enjoyed having our parents come to watch our phonics sessions on Monday.

Then we were able to try out our new role play area the doctors surgery. Mr Flynn even took on the role of a patient and we took it in turns to be doctors and nurses.

In maths we have been exploring ways to make 3 and 4 using our fingers and blocks. We have enjoyed creating our own stampolines like the numberblocks- these are ways of representing the numbers in different ways. We are great at using the vocabulary of parts.

In phonics we have been going back over the letter formation of the digraphs we have learnt and practicing tricky words.

As part of our PSHE personal social and emotional lesson with Mr Flynn this week we spoke about being safe with our bodies. We then made a giant obstacle course and spoke about how we could travel safely across it.

On Thursday, the most exciting thing happened... SNOW! Marwell enjoyed wrapping up warm and playing outside while the snowflakes tumbled down. They instinctively enjoyed throwing snowballs at Mrs Chaplen and found it hilarious!

This week started off with our hero day. We thoroughly enjoyed sharing our costumes and taking turns to talk about how our superheroes or real life heroes help us.

As part of our hero day we made our own superhero masks and cuffs, took part in a hero obstacle course and shared the different ways we could be a hero and help another person.

During our bikeabilty sessions we practised gliding as far as we could with control. In maths we have been discussing parts of an object and the whole thing in preparation for understanding how numbers are made up of other numbers.

As part of our topic 'Kindness' this week we shared the story Sharing a Shell' and spoke about how the characters behaved kindly towards others. We also shared other stories about characters who displayed kindness.

We were then challenged to show kindness to others and the teachers were challenged to ‘catch us being kind’ and award us with a kindness card.

In Discovery Time (our self directed time) some of the children chose to write and draw kind notes to others on hearts.

In phonics this week we learnt the final graphemes ‘l’ ‘ll’ and ‘ss’. We also started to learn the tricky words ‘I’ ‘into’ and ‘her’. We have been writing simple captions such as ‘a hot pot’ or ‘a mess’ using the graphemes we have learnt.

‘That completes all the phase 2 sounds (the first set of letters in phonics) the children have been doing brilliantly with their recognition of these and we are really pleased with their progress in blending sounds together to read words.

This week we shared books and watched clips about fireworks.
We spoke about safety around fireworks and measures we can take to keep safe. We even had a chance to hold our own sparklers!

We also started our first balance bike sessions this week. Every Monday we will take part in a Bikeability session where the children will develop their core muscles to prepare them for riding bikes with control.

This week we played a game called bench shuffle where the children had to shuffle forwards moving one foot at a time along a bench without using their hands. We were very impressed with their determination!

Then to help raise money for Children in Need we baked cupcakes with Mrs Emery and decorated them which was a lot of fun!

In PE with James and Luke we did gymnastics and explored different shapes we could make in a safe space. We also played a little football match on the grass.

In Phonics we have been learning to recognise the tricky words and, to, the, no and go. We have also taught the graphemes h,b,f (ff) and l (ll). We have worked hard to use the sounds we have learned so far to write some words about fireworks including pop and hot.

In maths we have been subitising (saying a number of objects without counting them individually) and looking at how patterns of dots can be easily recognised without having to count them all.

In the creative area, we have used a range of techniques to create our own firework displays- we used stamping, glitter and doodling. This was great for our fine motor skills.

For science, we did some season exploration and looked at the different colours we find in autumn. We used our best investigating skills and noticed that some leaves even had many different colours all in one!
